7th Dragon 2020 is a side sequel to 7th Dragon. Though the game system remained largely the same, the setting was changed from a sword-and-sorcery theme to a modern one.

Development[]

7th Dragon 2020 was developed by Imageepoch and published by SEGA. The sound composer was Yuzo Koshiro, with the Diva Mode tracks remixed by various VOCALOID P's including sasakure.UK, the latter of whom also composed the opening theme "SeventH-Heaven". Character designs were done by Shirou Miwa, an illustrator and member of the group supercell.

Plot[]

In the year 2020, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is troubled over the recent rapid spread of the Dragonsbane flower, as well as the hordes of monsters that come with it. As the Self-Defense Forces were unable to deal with the problem, a special group known as Murakumo was called in to assist. The clearing operation in Shinjuku was also used as an induction exam for the Rank S elite youths that were invited by the organization, with the player (and the group that they would later form) being the last to arrive.

The clearing operations take a turn for the worse when Dragons emerge, killing almost all the applicants. The player's group was also overwhelmed by the Emperor Dragon known as Warcry, but were saved in the nick of time by Daigo and Neko. However, their encounter with the powerful dragon left them unconscious for a month.

Upon awakening in an underground shelter, the group learns that the Dragons have completely taken over. They are later formally inducted into Murakumo and came to be known as Dragon Hunter Unit 13. Their mission: to hunt down all the dragons and take back Tokyo.

Reception[]

When it released in JP, 7th Dragon 2020 sold 122,500 copies on its first week.

Trivia[]

  • The popular VOCALOID Hatsune Miku appears as a guest NPC in 7th Dragon 2020. If you save her from a dragon you will unlock DIVA mode, which incorporates VOCALOID remixes to almost all the in-game BGMs.
